I feel like we have pretty good sense of what is happening in the homesteading world---particularly in NE Ohio and the surrounding areas. We know lots of people, we go to lots of events, we visit lots of farms and we spend every day doing what we can to support local producers of all varieties.
Its not until we sit down and collect the rolodex of experts that we know and that the rest of our network knows that you kind of have a "holy crap" moment. Its amazing how quickly we were able to assemble a crew of experts and leaders on topics ranging from canning to tapping, and training to composting.
The homestead revolution has really allowed people to revisit skills that became fringe in the post-WWII era, and revitalize the "diverse" farm experience. Joel Salatin is a perfect example of this---he is, after all, the self proclaimed lunatic farmer!
What will descend onto Kirtland in January is going to be a gathering of wisdom that is both generations in the making, but also built on the back of a social media machine that really is just starting to flex its muscles as a tool.
We are very biased, but the excitement that we are starting to feel around this event and the power that hundreds of homesteaders networking and sharing ideas will have is quite literally empowering.
